Torticollis
Defination:It is a developmental deffect in one sternomastoid muscle or male position of the neck in the uterus can give rise to this deformity.
Causative factor: Shortining of the sterno mastoid muscle.
Nature of the deformities:The head is fixed in side flection to the same side that is on the side of the affected muscle while it is rotated to the opposite side the shoulder on the affected side is raised.Scoliosis may be present in survical region.Facial a semmetery with smaller eyes lowering of corner of the month and eye with diviation of nose on affected side may be presented.
Treatment:to correct deformity by release of the contracted soft tissues and to maintain the correction by exercises.
Thermotherapy modality:Reduces pain and causes relaxation.
Passive movement: to attain relaxation and maintenance of correction.
Positioning:exact positioning of the head during sleep is important.
Self correction: in front of mirror and its maintenance by active efforts should be taught.
Stretching: for correction and relaxation.
Collar: cervical collar should be used and removed during exercises and discarded only after maximum correction.
