Osteoarthritis of knee joint Definition :I t can be difined as non-inflammatory degenerative disorder of joints characterized by progressive deterioration of the articuler cartilage and formation of new bones(osteophytes). Types :Primary when the cause is unknown. Secondary when it follow some known cause Example: trauma,infection, rheumatoid arthritis,etc Characteristics Primary osteoarthritis of knee is more common than secondary. It is common in female mostly middle age and obese. Symptoms Pain Stiffness limitations of movement Swelling sometimes with clicking sound locking of joint in advance cases. On examination There may be effusion, crepitation on movementand thickening of synovial fluid. There may be flexion deformity with limited movement . Conservative treatment Anti-inflammatory drugs and electrotherapy for relief of paine and exercises to strengthen quadriceps muscle and restore mobility.
